Scotland B 0, Germany B 1
Daun (80)
21 October 2003
Pittodrie
Att: 2,417
A late goal by substitute Markus Daun gave the Germany Future side
victory over their Scots counterparts at Pittodrie. A crowd of just
2,417 looked on as few players did much to impress national coach Berti
Vogts in a tedious match.
Bradford
City striker Andy Gray had a couple of chances to score for the home
side and Blackburn Rovers youngster Paul Gallagher looked lively in the
second half. However, Scotland were sunk 10 minutes from time when Daun
drove a powerful shot from 18 yards past Cardiff City keeper Neil
Alexander. "It was an unlucky result, but I saw a lot of good
combinations out there," said Vogts. "Germany were the favourites, and
we were the underdogs. But I saw a lot of positive things, especially up
front, and that's great for us."
Scotland had the opportunity to go in front two minutes from the
interval when a Barry Nicholson cross from the left found Gray at the
back post but his header went straight at German keeper Simon Jentzsch
from close range. Three minutes after the restart, Scotland substitute
Gallagher, on for Garry O'Connor, did well on the left hand side and his
cut back was waiting to be put into the net by Gray almost on the line
when the ball was cleared. In the 75th minute Germany substitute Daun
came close when his angled shot from 16 yards was saved by Alexander.
Then Gray's cross from the right hand side nearly found Gallagher at
the back post but the teenage striker was thwarted by Germany defender
Sven Muller. In the 80th minute, somewhat out of the blue, the Germans
took the lead with a fine goal. Daun spun on the edge of the box and
drove a low shot past the helpless Alexander and into the corner of the
net.
