Scotland's final Future Squad fixture in defeat as Turkey emerged
victorious in a high scoring encounter at Inverness to win the five nation
Future Cup.
The visitors raced into a two-goal lead thanks to Hasan Salih Kabze's
sixth-minute opener and a 25th-minute strike by Sinan Kaloglu, before Steven
Naismith pulled a goal back three minutes before the interval.
The Turks extended their advantage 16 minutes into the second period thank
to substitute Fahri Tatan, but in the 72nd minute Lee Miller connected with
a Barry Robson cross, before Ian Black and Orhan Ak were both dismissed in
injury time.
Following a 15-minute delay for crowd congestion and an impeccably minute's
silence for the late Scotland winger Jimmy Johnstone, Turkey neatly played
themselves into an early lead.
Galatasaray midfielder Kabze cleverly exchanged passes with Kaloglu on the
edge of the penalty area and when the ball returned to the right midfielder
he clipped a shot past goalkeeper Mark Brown via a slight deflection from
Motherwell defender Steven Hammell.
Scotland then tried in vain to bed themselves into the encounter, but the
home side were nearly caught on their heels once again 10 minutes later as
Kaloglu surged unchallenged towards a cruelly exposed Brown.
The left midfielder had no problems in leaving Scottish captain Martyn
Corrigan trailing in his wake, but at the vital moment the Vestel Manisaspor
player found himself caught in two minds and his cross-shot drifted wide,
with Kabze unmarked at the far post.
However, within nine minutes Kaloglu atoned for his earlier faux pas when he
drove a powerful effort past Brown from 12 yards to double Turkey's
advantage.
The Scotland goalkeeper was then forced into a fine double save by the
impressive away side, first blocking a poked shot from Ceyhun Eris with his
left foot before producing a fine parry to keep Volkan Arslan's close-range
follow-up out.
But despite having failed to threaten Turkey goalkeeper Aykut Ercetin in a
disappointing first half, Scotland pulled a goal back three minutes before
the interval thanks to Naismith, who pounced on the loose ball after Craig
Dargo's follow-up to a Robson shot had been saved.
A plethora of substitutions took place during the break which severely
halted the pace of the match for the opening 15 minutes of the second
period.
But on the hour Turkey scored their third goal of the evening with their
first incisive attack of the half.
Kaloglu was once again the architect when his clever flick on the turn took
him easily past Christophe Berra and from his weighted pass, Kabze found
himself through on goal.
The midfielder managed to beat replacement goalkeeper Iain Turner with his
effort, the ball was hastily hacked off the line by Adam Virgo - but
substitute Tatan was on hand to drive a shot into the far corner of the net.
Scotland responded in encouraging fashion though and from Robson's cross,
Miller rose highest in the area to glance a deft header past Ercetin in the
Turkish goal to again reduce the deficit to a single goal.
However, Turkey comfortably played out the remaining time to record a
deserved victory, before Black was dismissed for a strong tackle on Ak, who
was also sent off for retaliation
